Class 1 Freight

Overview

In the switching-intensive environment of a Class 1 railroad yard, train engines, cars, and crew and are in motion at the same time—a situation with a high potential for interference in movement and error in car placement. Cars must move fluidly from one spot to the next, and the traditional manual methods are often overloaded and capacity constrained terminals.

When car volumes increase, inefficiencies will multiply. With the advent of PTC, average mainline velocities are predicted to increase, adding even more pressure on often overloaded and capacity constrained terminals. As a terminal operator, you understand automation is the key to improving efficiency, but where do you begin?

RailComm’s Integrated Automation architecture is centered on its industry standard Domain Operations Controller (DOC®) system. Integrated Automation transforms a Class 1 rail yard, with receiving tracks lined to accept in-bound trains, reducing blocked crossings and accelerating pre-hump inspection activities. After cars are classified, DOC® transforms the pullback operation, allowing departure trains to be rapidly assembled, even with reduced staffing. Since routes are auto-lined, there is a tremendous reduction in accidents and injuries.  Safer, more efficient, and more profitable: These are the hallmarks of a DOC® controlled yard.
